A new study finds that just 45 minutes of art creation, for example, making clay models or drawing, can reduce the stress level, or in other words the level of the hormone cortisol, referred as the “stress hormone” It is produced in the adrenal glands, cortisol levels increase in response to stress. This means that the higher a person’s cortisol level, the more stressed they are.
For this study, researchers invited 39 adults from 18 to 59 years old to a 45-minnute session of art-making. Participants were provided with art materials, such as modelling clay, marker pens, and paper. They were allowed to use these materials to create anything they wanted to.
After analysis of the results, the researchers identified a reduction in the levels of cortisol among 75% of the participants. Scientists also noticed that art-related reduction of the stress level was stronger for young adults.
