Many health experts agree that it’s almost impossible to beat a water workout for an array of health benefits it gives. They believe that everyone from professional athletes to stroke survivors can benefit from water exercises combining walking or running against the natural resistance of the water.
Running and walking in water is a great physical therapy for people who rehabilitate from the hip, knee, and back surgeries. It is also an easy and simple form of exercise for senior people with arthritis.
A recent study shows that a water workout also can speed recovery from stroke faster compared to the traditional treadmill.
Dr. Naresh Rao, a sports medicine expert and the Olympic Team USA Water Polo Physician for the 2016 Summer Games, says: “We’ve been using hydrotherapy to help decrease any sort of gravity that can affect joint function. I personally prescribe it for knee issues and low back issues.”
