Center for Control and Prevention of diseases in the USA reported about the first known case of transmission of Zika virus by sexual contact when woman infected her partner, according to Popular Science.
According to doctors, after unprotected intercourse twenty years old woman from New York, who recently traveled to areas infected by Zika fever, transmitted the virus to her partner.
A lot of evidences, as well as research of scientists helped to establish that Zika virus can be transmitted from men to women (during intercourse) due to the fact that the pathogen persists in infected males semen for many weeks. But the last case suggests that the virus is also able to survive in vaginal secretions.
The possibility of transmission of Zika virus to healthy men through unprotected contact is likely to cause the World Health Organization to revise its recommendation for a summer Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
In May 2016 more than 150 scientists and doctors signed a letter to the head of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan urging to abolish or transfer the Olympics. The authors expressed the view that more than half a million tourists may spread the virus to other countries, where it will be extended.
